New York Nagaram…

Its the 100th time i am listening to this track since i downloaded it on my iPod. What a song! This one undoubtedly makes in to the top of all tracks composed by rahman. Its what one of bloggers got to say about this track :

” i listened to a couple of tracks from the movie. they seemed to be good. then started playing a track – ‘New York nagaram urangum neram…’.
Golly! What a song!
when you listen to it, it feels like the song was actually composed & written by a person on a snowy new york night sitting alone in some condo of a skyscraper….
anyone who has witnessed such a night in the Big Apple from a high rise can relate to it.

and i bet it’d prove to be extremely harmful if someone listens to this track sitting alone in such an atmosphere… yes, never attempt to do that!

the tune, the city, the night, the snow, the rivershore, the wind, the glass walls, the solitude, her memories, the cold outside, the heat inside…

the music, the lyrics, the voices…
pure class.
haunting.”

Read the blog here…

and for those unfortunate souls like me who don’t understand Tamil… here goes the translation : )

New York nagaram urangum neram, thanimai adarndadhu..
In the moment when NewYork city went to sleep, loneliness caught me..
Paniyum padarndadhu..
And snow spread all over..
Kappal erangiye kaatrum karaiyil nadandadhu..
(It was so lonely that) Even the breeze got down from the ship and started walking on shores!

Naangu kannadi chuvargalukulle naanum mezhuguvathiyum..
Inside the four glass walls, me and a candlelight
Thanimai thanimaiyo.. Kodumai kodumaiyo..
How lonely… how trecherous…

Stanza 1

Paechelaam thalaatu pola ennai uranga veikka nee illai
Oh beloved, you are not here to put me to sleep with the lullaby talk of yours
Nilavin oliyin mutham thandhu kaalai coffee kudukka nee illai
You are not here to kiss me in moonlight and give me coffee in the morning
Vizhiyil vizhum dhoosi thannai naaval edukka nee ingu illai
You are not here to blow my eyes when dirt falls into my eyes
Manadhil ezhum kuzhapam thannai theerka nee inge illai..
You are not here to clear the confusions of my heart

Naan inge neeyum ange, indha thanimaiyil nimishangal varusham aanadheno?
I’m here & you are there, In this loneliness, minutes have become years!
Vaan inge neelam ange, indha oovamaiku eruvarum vilakam aanadheno?
The sky is here & the color blue is there, Why did we become an example to that simile?!

Stanza 2

Naatkurippil nooru thadavai undhan peyarai ezhudhum en pena
My pen wrote your name 100 times in my daily planner
Ezhudhiyadhum erumbu moikka peyarum aanadhena thenaa?
Just as I wrote, ants came from all over, did your name turn into honey?

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh..

Jil endru bhoomi irundhum, indha tharunathil kulir kaalam kodai aanadheno?
Even in this chill weather why is this winter season like hot summer to me?

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh..

Vaa anbe neeyum vandhal senthanal kuda panikatti pole marumae..
Oh beloved, come to me.. if you are here even a burning charcoal will become a snowball !

Yeh yeh yeh yeh yeh yeh yeh…

and thanks to Vijay for the translation.

and i miss someone when i listen to this song… hope that someone knows… when she reads this!

been searching for this one for cpl of weeks.. dankes mate !!

I would almost rate “Vellai pookal” as his best, again… its the phase of a person’s life which decides why this song can be better.

    cheers

  9. 10 Jan September 26, 2006 at 1:27 pm

Hey… thanks, have been looking for the lyrics for some time now! Nice translation! :D But I’d just like to make a correction. In the line that goes “How lonely, how trecherous”, torturous would be a more apt translation than trecherous.

  10. 11 Satish Gopalan September 27, 2006 at 9:03 am

This is a great song. The Music of the song and the Tempo is good. It was sung by A.r.Rehman himself with is a plus point. The song has been captured in a beautiful location of New york and Crisp editing by Anthony. Both Suriya and Jothika are good.

Thanks for the lyrics…….and good luck to you to erase your loneliness soon………one small correction in translation…….

    1st Stanza……..last line…….

    Instead of

The sky is here & the color blue is there, Why did we become an example to that simile?!”

    It shud be……
” The sky is there and land is here (far apart),Why did we become an example to that simile?!”

    Good luck

    Hi guys,

As far as the song (the poetry) goes, Vaali has come up with an ace.
The tune is haunting for sure. And the ARR himself rendered it with ease.

If you would like to try another flavour of translation

If you do like, it, do leave a comment and dont forget to link back to me.

Great song. Does something something to me. Miss my love so much. Really really lonely here. so many people around me, yet seems like the whole world around is empty. I am so lost here. Is there a life in US?

You get everything here, money, fame, property…..yet no life, no love. Feels like jail.

Miss India (the masala smell when u enter any grocery store, tht traffic sound, babies crying, ranganathan street full of indian faces, guys sitting on the fence teasing girls, watching cricket putting off all the work……nice na??) Miss everything. When will I come back?

when will i unite with my love? huh?

ok, got side-tracked a lot. wanted to tell my feelings to someone. sorry. Love the song, even munbe vaa song is superb.

Thanks for the lyrics and translation.

Hi, I’m Jeremy, Chinese from Malaysia. Yes… Even though I didn’t understand the song at first, I found it to be a very very nice song. Although only 4 chords on the guitar Am, F, C, G. It’s a very melodic song and I like the way he mixes western music and indian music AR Rahman is definately talented and I would like to hear more… (even though I don’t understand the song).

    Any Recommendations?

  58. 61 Anand May 4, 2007 at 2:18 pm

Its haunting. I had the chance of seeing him live in Sydney, absolutely amazing. I have listened to a wide variety of music for last 25 years from U2,Ac/Dc, Guns n Roses to Mukesh/Rafi/Rd Burman…old to new songs in 4 languages but this guy is a world apart by what he does as he transcends languages and borders. For some reason his music feels a lot different it comes from the heart….If you want to hear him sing in English search for “pray for me brother” its a song he did for UN….Salute to the God of music.

    Arios Sanchez……

  69. 73 Vasanth September 4, 2007 at 4:25 am

    New York city was sleeping
    Loneliness was growing
    Mist was enveloping
Boarding down from ships, Wind is walking on land
I’m crying locked up in a glass cage with a candle
Loneliness surrounding me, It’s a torture

Your thoughts are making me go sleepless
Moon didn’t kiss and offer me my morning coffee
She’s not here to blow out a speck falling into my eyes
Why aren’t you gere with me to calm my ruffled mind?
I’m here and you are there
There moments of loneliness are like years for me
Sea is here blue is there
Have we become a paradigm for it? (New York city…)

My pen writes imposition of your name in my diary
My pen acquires sweetness with ants swarming it
    Though it’s chill out here
Why this chilly winter has turned into summer this moment?
    If you come my dear
Even hot lava will frost into ice (New York city…)
